Accelerating the Goods

Accelerating the GoodsLimited Edition Print, signed and numbered, depicting 2857 at Reading, from a painting by Bridgnorth based artist John Austin GRA. Each print is accompanied with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. Prints are in full colour, plate size 14 1/2 x 22 inches on paper sized 17 3/4 x 25 1/4 inches.

The picture shows Churchward 2-8-0 No.2857 in as-built condition, with inside steam passage cylinders, accelerating an evening goods train on the up fast line from Reading. This was at a time when Churchward’s new range of locomotives were setting new standards in speed and tonnage for the GWR, so the 28XX class could be seen accelerating GW goods trains generally throughout the system. The old order is represented by the Dean Goods standing on the up relief, overtaken by 2857 as she virtually bursts out of the picture. Balancing the composition on the right is the Gas Works saddle tank as she runs out to pick up a few wagons from the main line.

Order details TBC.
